Design Master Wish List

The current releases are DM Electrical RT 1.3, DM Electrical 8.5, DM HVAC 7.3, and DM Plumbing 4.1. We are not adding new features to these releases.

The next releases will be DM Electrical RT 1.4, DM Electrical 8.6, DM HVAC 7.4, and DM Plumbing 4.2 We are actively working on these release and using this wishlist to guide which features we implement. Some features you see marked as “complete” will not be available until these releases are finished.

  1. Total Load in Project

Please add capability to total loads for the project before the circuiting is complete.

I would like to have a load sheet that keeps track of the total project load.

What I use now is a modified panel shedule that only shows the loads for a dummy panel I create called service. I connect all the panels together and then to Service. This gives me a total load analysis for the project, but only after the design is complete. I need to be able to confirm my loads and service sizing at the design development stage before circuiting.

    A consideration…

  2. add medium voltage conductors as an option when sizing conduits.

MV conductor insulation is much larger so you cannot get as many conductors inside a conduit. if you're using design master to calculate your feeder conduits it will be incorrect over 600v. I don't believe this is readily apparent now.

  3. Export Equipment List to Excel

Export a list of equipment connections and information to a file that can be opened and viewed in Excel. The file would be for post-processing only. Any changes to the equipment would still be made using the other DM commands.

  5. Different layer systems for different loops and tick marks on a circuit

We can assign layers based on one-line (panel) or circuit or devices however not all parts of circuit are on the same layer. I may run some in the slab and some in the walls. Having the ability toi use the manual loop tool to change the layer system would be helpful. Also having the ability to assign a device to multiple layers would be helpful as well.

Or have some of the loops new and some existing.

  6. Selected device type to find that are uncircuited

Often I circuit items by device type, such as equipment first, then general receptacles, and finally lighting. Sometimes I only show the light fixtures or site lighting but don't ever circuit them as a lighting designer is taking that part of the contract. So under either situation if the symbols have already been placed and I do the “Highlight Uncircuited Devices” command, I get so many lines going all over the place that I can't find out which receptacles I haven't circuited. It would be nice under the Highlight Uncircuited Devices label you have a sub-selection of: Receptacle, Lights, Equipment,…

  8. add sub-script option for junction boxes

Add subscript for junctions boxes like you did for low voltage devices.

  9. Low Voltage Homerun With Keynote

On low voltage systems drawings (Fire Alarm, Security, CCTV) we treat homeruns differently than power and lighting homeruns. We do not use the circuit label, wire callout, or tick marks, but rather we use a keynote. If there was a “keynote homerun”, it would save us the time spent removing the wire call-out every time we create low voltage homerun.

  10. Import single piece of equipment

Currently, the "Import Equipment from Another Project" command imports all the equipment. Update that function to allow you to choose specific pieces of equipment to import.

For Energy Code compliance, the light Fixture Schedule should include a subtotal of watts for each fixture type, and a total of watts for all the fixtures on the posted schedule. That will help expedite the Lighting Power Density calculations required for Energy Code Compliance.

  13. When inserting circuited equipment on a drawing, do not insert a homerun

When inserting a piece of equipment on a drawing that is connected to a circuit, the homerun is inserted, too. Add a checkbox to the insert equipment dialog box to allow you to insert the equipment with a circuit label but no homerun.

  14. Add a sort by circuit id, then by callout to Project Explorer

Many times on complicated drawings I have a circuit that feeds multiple floors of devices or large areas. When I do Find Circuit, DM will zoom way out, highlight all the devices, and put lines to them. As soon as I try to find those far away circuits the lines disappear and then I start the needle in the hay stack look. If I has sort by circuit id, then callout I could see all the devices and then select find on each device of that circuit till I select the one in question since it creates a line that…

  15. Breaker Using Twice as Many Spaces

Many breaker panels of old and of new has the ability to put a single, two, or three pole breaker in that takes twice as many spaces as normal. Example is I have a panel I have to represent that has a 2 pole breaker that takes position 36-38 and 40-42. It also has a 3 pole breaker in it that take 24-26,28-30,32-34. I have no way of circuiting the device and still have it on phase A, B, and C.

  16. Find Unlooped Devices

A function similar to “Find Uncircuited” that finds elements that are circuited but have not been looped – “Find Unlooped” or something of that nature. I often am at risk of missing a dedicated receptacle or single equipment connection that I circuited, but missed when I was going through the looping/home run process.

  17. Same equipment in multiple drawings or areas

Right now I can put one-line devices on multiple drawings, but not equipment. Sometimes the equipment is so large such as a chiller that it needs to be seen on the site drawing at a different scale than the electrical plan view.

  19. Set room boundaries to also be light-obstructing rectangles for photometric analysis

It duplicates work to trace the boundaries of all rooms for energy analysis and circuit naming, then have to trace all the rooms again for photometric analysis. This would likely require the addition of a 'door' object to define places where light-obstructing boundaries would be ignored

  20. Error Checking

Provide a simple error checking routine that will look at panel loads and compare them to wire sizes and ratings of upstream breakers. This could be a simple table like voltage drop and fault currents where out of range values are shown in a different font type.
