Design Master Wish List

The current releases are DM Electrical RT 1.1, DM Electrical 8.4, DM HVAC 7.3, and DM Plumbing 4.1. We are not adding new features to these releases.

The next releases will be DM Electrical RT 1.2, DM Electrical 8.5, DM HVAC 7.4, and DM Plumbing 4.2 We are actively working on these release and using this wishlist to guide which features we implement. Some features you see marked as “complete” will not be available until these releases are finished.

How can we improve Design Master?

  1. Light Fixture Watts

Include watts as a field in light fixtures. VA is used for panel schedules and load calculations. Watts is needed for energy calculations.

      • One-Line Diagram: Fixed feeder IDs

Be able to have fixed feeder IDs in a project. Two possible uses:

        1. When a new feeder is added, it won't change the IDs on all the other feeders. Not a problem during early design, but it is a problem when the drawings are under change control. Having to bubble all of the feeder IDs makes it look like a bigger change than it actually is.

        2. Be able to have consistent ID names across projects. A specific feeder configuration would have a common name, making it easier to read plans for different projects.

        Also be able to have…

        • Equipment Loads

It would be convenient when creating equipment to enter loads using amps and let DM calculate the corresponding KVA value. Often manufacturers data includes only amperes at a given voltage and KVA must be manually calculated.

            • add a panel based demand factor for devices

Under Design Master Electrical Options=>Miscellaneous=>Custom Load Type=>Calculation Method, add a fourth option which is call “Panel Based” which would still have a default demand factor. Then when we go in to circuit a device with that demand factor name we will circuit it to the default demand. However, as we move up to upstream panels and see that device circuited already, we can change the demand factor in the circuit panel which is typically dimmed. This will solve the problem we have of dealing with Trailer parks, docks, Ranges, Dryers, and other devices that have different demands as you move…

              • Add footnotes at the bottom of schedules, to allow common notes to be listed/identified with a char

Add footnotes at the bottom of schedules, to allow common notes to be listed/identified with a character in the notes section. This would save typing the same notes every time and shorten the space required for them. The same idea could work for mech equipment.

                • Default one-line labels for dynamically sized one-line blocks

By default, creating a one-line diagram generates panel blocks with dynamically sized width to accommodate the number of outgoing connections. This is because the default riser block for panels is set to <Custom Panel Box with Bus>. As a result, a panel that feeds three other panels will have a one-line block three times as wide as a panel which feeds only one panel.

If a user wants to generate one-line diagrams which include a default set of labels, they first have to create a one-line block containing the desired labels from entities in the drawing. However, when the user…

                  • Add the ability to customize the "EDIT ONELINE DEVICE LABELS" for all devices.

Add the ability to customize the "EDIT ONE-LINE DEVICE LABELS" for all each type of one-line device. When inserting devices into the one-line we need to add the same prefix and suffix to each device. As an example we add prefix CONNECTED and suffix KVA to each panel to show the connected KVA.

                    • Equipment Connections with Shared Definitions

Create a way to schedule equipment similar to light fixtures or receptacles so that you have multiple instances of one type of equipment. Often a piece of equipment appears multiple times in a project. This feature will make it easier to update when the definition of the equipment changes.

We implemented what we hope covers the spirit of this request in DM Electrical 8.3. Rather than make shared definitions, we decided to make it possible (and easy) to change multiple pieces of equipment at once. Using the “Edit Multiple Equipment” command, you can select all the similar equipment and make changes to all of it at once.

Give us the ability to set default styles/values for fault current and lighting fixture schedules so we don't have to recreate them for every project.

I talk to the guys around here everyday and the $840 yr compared to $5000 is kicking REVIT's Butt! Please go teach them how we Engineers and Designers really…

                                • Add tag to feeder schedules

by using tags on feeder schedules, you tie your predefined feeders into your one line and eliminate the busy appearance of long string of text for wire/conduit sizes on the one line. If done in the wire sizing tables it would allow common feeder combinations to be built one time and put into a feeder schedule table

                                      • Change Fixture Tags as a part of "Edit Multiple Fixtures".

When "Editing Multiple Fixtures", the fixture in the database is changed, but the fixture tag is not changed in the drawing. It would be good for this to change automatically, similar to the attributes of "edit multiple receptacles" so that each fixture tag does not have to be edited manually.

                                        • Add lumens, lamp depreciation, IES file name, and possibly mtg height (if it's constant) to the light fixture schedule.

Would be useful when evaluating different lighting options. Also would make identifying input errors easier when swapping out IES files and lamp types.
