Design Master Wish List

The current releases are DM Electrical RT 1.1, DM Electrical 8.4, DM HVAC 7.3, and DM Plumbing 4.1. We are not adding new features to these releases.

The next releases will be DM Electrical RT 1.2, DM Electrical 8.5, DM HVAC 7.4, and DM Plumbing 4.2 We are actively working on these release and using this wishlist to guide which features we implement. Some features you see marked as “complete” will not be available until these releases are finished.

How can we improve Design Master?

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

    • Voltage Drop Based upon Connected or Other Load

Be able to specify that the voltage drop on a feeder should be based upon the connected or other load, rather than the calculated load.

One example of a use for this feature is a piece of equipment that serves a single motor. You want the voltage drop for the connected load of the motor, rather than the calculate load, which will be 125% of the motor load.

        • Breaker Using Twice as Many Spaces

Many breaker panels of old and of new has the ability to put a single, two, or three pole breaker in that takes twice as many spaces as normal. Example is I have a panel I have to represent that has a 2 pole breaker that takes position 36-38 and 40-42. It also has a 3 pole breaker in it that take 24-26,28-30,32-34. I have no way of circuiting the device and still have it on phase A, B, and C.

            • New and Existing Circuits / Breakers in Panel Schedule

Be able to show new and existing circuits on different layers in a panel schedule. The existing circuits would be on a lighter layer and the new circuits would be on a darker layer. The rest of the schedule could be on either the new or existing layer.

                • On a one-line diagram, a vertical bus panel should have horizontal branch breakers--NOT vertical!

When you generate a one-line diagram, if you have panels that have a vertical bus, their branch breakers end up at the bottom of the bus and are vertical. The look like main breakers--not branch breakers. A work around for this is for every vertical bus panel, generate a riser diagram starting with that panel. Even this work around is not perfect, as you have to resize the vertical bus and fiddle with the branch breaker.

                  • Lighting loads - additional options

I like the recent addition of the general lighting loads, but there are a couple of additional things that I would like to see related to that.

                    1. I think that the calculated load should include the greater of the general lighting load or the connected lighting load. The NEC states that the values for the general lighting loads are minimum values and that they may not be adequate.

Ok, so this is probably a low priority because the NEC values are pretty conservative. With the increased adoption of energy conservation codes it becomes less likely that the connected lighting…

                      • Apply demand factors to loads by phase on panels

NEC demand factors currently are calculated for the whole panel, not for each individual phase. It is possible to load one phase with a load type that has a demand factor (such as a kitchen load) and the other phases with load types that do not (such as continuous). The total load on the panel should account for these differences in demand factors by phase.

                        • Simpler way to Change fonts in all your panel/switch box schedules

Right now, one has to edit all the blocks of a panel schedule in order to simply change the font. There should be a way to set the preferred font for all these schedules. If there is a way, I don't know about it. When I first set up DM 10 years or so ago, I do not remember having to change every block, but it's been so long ago...

I would like to suggest that the photometric calculation schedule be a combined schedule for all rooms instead of a dedicated schedule for each single room/space (or both options be available). We are typically asked to provide a single schedule that lists the room/space name in the first column and then the various footcandle columns.

When wiring I have more often than not had to manually loop my devices for a better looking presentation but the only problem is that the wires loose their intelligence and become as regular polylines. I would like to see an intelligent manual line which auto breaks and shows the tick marks just like the auto looping feature does please.

                                    • Locate and edit schedules within groups to create T.I. voltage drop and other schedules that don't include the entire project.

When there is T.I. work within a large project you want to show only the the voltage drop for the TI space. You have to deselect all the equipment not in the space one at a time to show a voltage drop schedule for just the TI work. What if you could group the panels in a similar way to luminaires so that the TI voltage drop or fault schedule has only the TI panels, without disabling the ability to show a schedule for the main project or another TI within that project.
